11-16-07 Couch Potato Corner

Today I'm going to try to have separate posts for tv/media stuff and science/tech stuff. We'll see how it goes. I usually post as I find things in no particular order. Let me know what you think of the change.

It appears NBC is using their "Create Your Own Hero" contest to replace Heroes: Origins. (So much for the hope it was just being delayed.) I'm sure it is cheaper for them, but I'd rather have the writers creating characters that get voted on, not the audience picking attributes they want with nobody making them come to life.

I don't watch his show, but I respect David Letterman for continuing to pay non-writing staff that are out of work for the foreseeable future because of the strike.

TLC is going to revamp Trading Spaces again and bring back Paige. (What they really need to do is bring back the good designers, but it might get me to give it another try.)

DVRs for tonight:
5pm Flash Gordon
7pm Stargate Atlantis
8pm Men in Trees & Blood Ties & Ghost Whisperer
9pm Moonlight & Womens Murder Club
10pm Numb3rs

Electricity drawn from common bacteria in dirt. Sounds interesting.

The University of Ghent has come up with electric wires that stretch. This could allow for greater flexibility in electronic devices.

CNet has an article on the interconnectedness between Google and Firefox (conflict of interest?).

They are actually making a 2nd X-Files movie. David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Chris Carter will all be involved and it will be released in July 2008.

Eliza Dushku has brought Joss Whedon back to Fox TV. They have signed on to make Dollhouse, a show about agents programmed with personalities for their missions. Dushku's character is starting to become self aware. They have ordered 7 episodes for the fall, but plan to start filming them in the spring (before the actors strike, assuming the writers don't strike first and leave them short of scripts). There's more info here, including an interview and a note that Tim Minear will be involved. (Hopefully that won't be a death sign for it.)

Heroes: Origins has been shelved. Concerned over a writers strike and the slight dip in ratings, NBC isn't going to make the show this season. They may bring it back next season, but this sounds like proof that NBC isn't going to air anything I want to see if there's a strike.

Womens Murder Club got an order for another 3 scripts. They left that order a little late.

Geek pumpkin competition. And a great gallery of pumpkins.

DVRs for tonight:
8pm My Name is Earl
9pm CSI & Grey's Anatomy & Supernatural (as a download or wait for dvd)
930 Scrubs (either this or Grey's will need to be a download)
10pm Big Shots

Roundup for 9-28-07

DVR for tonight:
5pm Doctor Who (SCIFI)
6pm Flash Gordon (SCIFI) - I still haven't seen any of these, but I'm still recording in case I like them when I get around to it.
7pm Stargate Atlantis (SCIFI) - It's back! Yay!
8pm Ghost Whisperer (CBS)
9pm Moonlight (CBS) - New show about a vampire detective. Probably worth a pilot even if the reviews are dreadful.
10pm Numb3rs (CBS)

Someone has summarized all the Heroes online comics in case, like me, you looked at one or two with bandwidth problems, never went back, and are missing some of the character details they reveal there.

Bionic Woman and Journeyman have added cast members.

A preliminary poster has been prepared for the next Pixar movie, Wall-E. I think it looks good.

Next year there will be 2 2nd-generation astronauts in space at the same time. Richard Garriott, creator of the Ultima computer games and son of Skylab astronaut Owen Garriott, will be traveling to the ISS as part of the Russian space tourist program and be met by 2nd generation cosmonaut Sergei Volkov. Cool.

Interview with Jorja Fox about CSI (minor spoilers included).

Cool tech of the day: A photocopier that translates between Japanese and English with the touch of a button.

The College of San Mateo is hosting a free, all day event this Saturday (tomorrow) at their new planetarium. There will be free planetarium shows, views from the solar telescope and other telescopes, demos, jazz and food. Sounds like it could be fun. Event flyer. Website with maps, schedule & raffle prizes.

Two different stories today about DNA sequencing: Scientists are using hair samples to sequence the DNA of mammoths, and researchers have mapped the genome of the pinot noir grape. It has more genes than humans, and more than 100 of them control flavor (double other plants).

Roundup for 9-24-07

TV for tonight:
DVR1:
Chuck (geek gets download of spy knowledge - sounds like Jake 2.0 - worth a pilot)
Heroes (finally back!!!!!)
Journeyman (time travel - worth a pilot)
DVR2:
How I Met Your Mother
Big Bang Theory (giving this a pilot basically because it comes between 2 shows I'll watch although I doubt it will be worth a second episode)
2.5 Men

More writer/directors named for Heroes: Origins. Eli Roth ("Hostel") and Michael Dougherty ("Superman Returns") join Kevin Smith ("Clerks", etc.).

TVShowsonDVD is taking a REALLY in depth look at the new Young Indy dvd sets. I would like to rewatch some of these, but it might seem a bit strange to see Sean Patrick Flannery play a good guy. ;) Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Cute story of geeks meant for each other: Marriage proposal in a crossword puzzle.

RIP Marcel Marceau (the most famous mime ever) and Alice Ghostley (Esmerelda from Bewitched, etc.).

Article about all the geeks on TV this fall (or shows aimed for geeks).

Article listing the best geek TV of our generation (#1 is Buffy). As usual with any list, I have problems with the order and omissions, but it is better than some.

New version of Gmail being tested according to ZDNet.

Wikipedia is making changes to become more trustworthy.

Really fascinating article on the top 10 transhumanist technologies (basically future technologies to change the way we live approached from a "we will definitely get this and this is why and how" sort of approach).

Article on Heroes (not to be read until tomorrow because it warns of spoilers).

Cord blood transfusions from siblings cures sickle cell disease and Thalassemiain in 90% of cases.

Low cost, high-efficiency solar panels nearing mass production.

Astronomers have modeled 14 planet types to help them spot an Earth-like planet elsewhere.

New studies show that the Amazon rainforest recovers better from drought than previous models suggested. I guess that gives us some hope.

Arthur C. Clarke comments on the Google X Prize award.

In preparation for the Heroes premier on Monday, EW has reviewed every 1st season episode here.

SyFy portal talks about the expected writers strike and potential actors strike and how SciFi is responding.

Interview with George Lucas about an upcoming Star Wars animated TV show.

The complete Heinlein Archives have been put online according to Slashdot and the Mercury News.

Another new spaceship propulsion technology is being developed: the Mini-Mag Orion.

Someone tried to sell Belgium on eBay.

There's something about reading Stephen Fry review smart phones that reminds me a bit of Douglas Adam's tech reviews from The Salmon of Doubt (but that could just be me).

Roundup for 9-18-07

Brief reviews of new shows from Sacramento Bee. Most of the shows I definitely want to watch got good rankings from them, the ones I've said "I might give it a pilot" are all over the place, and I might be willing to give one or 2 more a chance because they sound better than I thought they would.

IBM is making a free, downloadable office suite to challenge Microsoft. It sounds like a version of OpenOffice (who they just partnered with) with IBM support. Sounds great.

First angel shark born in captivity in SF. Why is it that I like aquariums and I have been living between the ones in SF and Monterey for 4 years now and still haven't gone to either one? I need to change that.

Interview with Naomi Novik about her latest book and the pending Peter Jackson movie, etc.

November 7, 2007 has been announced as the release date for the hardcover version of the Heroes online comics.

Weird but true: Personal jet wing in development.

Lauren Graham has signed a development deal with NBC. So sometime in the next year they will develop a new show for her. Let's hope it is good.

I'm not sure if I would use the email program Mozilla is working on, but after reading this article, I'm glad they are doing it.

New stuff coming from Lee & Miller per the Liad Infodump on her blog. Cool!

New battery being developed for plug-in hybrids could make the technology more affordable.

Roundup for 8-31-07

It sounds a bit like friends having a joke together, but Kristen Bell and Clark Duke from Greek say they are forming a band. Well, we know they both can sing, let's just hope they choose better lyrics than that "Darwin Lied" song from Greek (and not quite as absurd as Reefer Madness).

The skywatch alert for tonight is actually 830-9pm (much better than 130-6am for the eclipse). It is supposed to be a good time to see the Draco the Dragon constellation.

Great casting for the Royal Shakespeare Company, but potentially weird scheduling, delays or a new Doctor Who for season 5. David Tennant and Patrick Stewart are going to star in Hamlet next year. Afterwards, David Tennant will play in Love's Labor's Lost.

According to SFTV.org:
SciFi looks to be planning to repurpose NBC's Journeyman, Bionic Woman
and Chuck, but do not appear to have Heroes on their schedule. The last
week of September shows Journeyman airing at 7 pm on Thursday with
The Bionic Woman at 7 pm on Friday. On Sunday night, they have Chuck
scheduled at 11 pm with Journeyman at 12 midnight. Once Doctor Who
ends its run in the 8 pm Friday time slot, it may be that one of the
NBC shows will take over that time slot on Oct 11th.

They have cast James McAvoy as Scotty in the new Star Trek movie. (I've seen him in 4 roles, but strangely remember him best as the faun in Chronicles of Narnia).

An act signed in 2005 going into effect May 2008 will require us all to have Big Brother style "Real ID" Drivers Licenses that link to birth certificate, SSN, photo, and address (requiring a trip to DMV with all the paperwork to prove this for EVERYONE) or - for states that don't go along with this program - we will have to carry passports to fly a domestic plane or enter a federal building or national park.

Funny gimmick: It looks like Two and a Half Men and CSI are going to swap writers for one episode this season. The CSI is going to have Christine Baranski as the co-star of a murdered TV diva. (Probably a dream fulfillment since the writer is known to have feuded with both Rosanne Barr and Cybil Sheppard on their shows. Sounds like he learned Joss Whedon's lesson since 2.5 Men doesn't have a name in the title. ;)

World Fantasy Award nominees announced. 2 of the novels I already wanted to read. I never heard of a 3rd but have added it to my wish list because it sounds great. The other 2 don't interest me and I tend to think they made the list by author name without anyone bothering to read them first. The sad thing is you have to get down to Best Anthology before you find something I've already read. You can guess which books fit in which categories if you check out the list.

In trying to find out if Jeckyll was hacked for US television (I can't find runtimes, but it sounds like it was), I found that Steven Moffat wrote 42 episodes of a show called "Press Gang" back in the early 90s. I'm curious about this, even if it is aimed a bit younger. (Oh, and rumors persist that Steven Moffat will take over Doctor Who if Russell Davies leaves.)

Last week, ABC's new show Big Shots got the actor playing Harry Dresden as a recurring character. This week they get Rob Thomas (of Veronica Mars) as consulting producer. With the cast this already had, I may have to change this from "not interested" to "watch the pilot to see if they can be better than their premise".

OK. I admit I'm having a bad day, and I'm oversensitive, but this bugs me. Harris Polls has released a study that more people go online to research health concerns before visiting their doctors. They call these "cyberchondriacs" where I consider it to be common sense. I've had enough idiotic uninformed doctors that I think it is necessary to do some research myself, and I wouldn't go in the first place if I didn't think it were necessary. They say they don't mean anything negative, but I really don't like the hypochondriac comparison.

Dresden Files has been canceled. Not an official announcement, just a by-the-way comment in casting for another show: the lead actor has been cast in Big Shots for ABC (great cast, bad premise, I doubt I'll watch). I'm sad, I actually liked the show.

Good news and bad news from Fox: They changed their schedule and have moved Bones to Tuesday. I like this timeslot much better - there isn't any competition. We're used to lists of best shows and prematurely canceled shows, but someone has now made a list of 5 SF shows that were completely trashed and destroyed before finally going off the air. Since 3 of the 5 are shows I was recording in first season and not even watching when they went off the air, I pretty much agree and would have a hard time finding better examples. What do you think?
