Jo Walton reviews Ventus by Karl Schroeder at Tor.com since he now has it as a free ebook on his website. I read this a few months ago and loved it. If you haven't read it, you should.

The UK is bringing out a mythological creatures stamp collection, with art by Dave McKean and a short short story by Neil Gaiman for each creature. Sources: Wired (best pics) and Neil Gaiman's blog.

Discovery.com lists the Top 10 Moments in Astronomy.

Space.com has an amazing photo of colliding galaxies taken by the Hubble telescope after it won a poll as the next target. They also have an article about plans to grow flowers on the moon.

According to John Scalzi, Audible is offering Metatropolis for free for a limited time because of the Hugo nomination.

The founder of Other Change of Hobbit (one of the best bookstores I've been to) talks about the early days.

Zap2It has a description of Fox's potential new comedy shows. Nothing here I have to see from what they say.

Richard Dean Anderson will guest star in a couple episodes of Stargate: Universe.

SciFi wire has interviews with James Marsters about 2 projects: Moonshot (about Apollo 11), and High Plains Invaders.

The final Pushing Daisies episodes finally have a timeslot (although a horrible one): Saturdays at 10pm starting May 30th.

Another sign that Reaper will be canceled - the creators are leaving the show for a new commitment with Fox.

Last week 6 volunteers sealed themselves into a capsule that will mimic the conditions of a trip to Mars. Sources: BBC, Telegraph

A new DNA test may replace the PAP smear since it was dramatically more effective at diagnosing cervical cancer in a recent 8-year study.

The Hugo Award nominees have been announced. Several of my nominees made the final ballot (although a few of the ones I wanted the most didn't), and overall it looks like a pretty good list. Several of the nominees are already available as free downloads, and more are sure to be available soon at either the official Anticipation site or linked through this SF Signal post. For comments from nominees, see John Scalzi's initial thoughts and follow-up Q&A posts, Neil Gaiman's post, Charles Stross' post, Cory Doctorow's post

Buy from your local independent bookstore before the end of March and be eligible to win great stuff (small press books). See here for details.

Hypertext is now 20 years old. Doesn't it seem like longer than that?

Tonight's Battlestar Galactica finale (I really need to catch up so I can see this before it gets spoiled) will be followed by a trailer for Stargate: Universe. EW has a photo of the cast (in case you forgot who was cast). This episode may also have a cameo by real-life astronaut Garrett Reisman (who talks about it at Space.com).

The Middleman dvd will be released on July 28th. If you haven't seen this show, remember to watch the dvd. (Also, apparently the show is officially "dormant" not canceled, so more people getting the dvd might help bring it back.)

Big Bang Theory and 2.5 Men just received multi-year renewals.

SF Gate has an article on how an iTouch can be used as a contract-free iPhone.

Strangest wine gadget I've ever heard of: an inventor has made an ultrasound machine shaped like a wine bucket that ages wine. You put in a cheap young bottle of wine and it comes out 30 minutes later tasting like a fine aged vintage.

James Earl Jones has received many awards over the years, but his first SAG award will be the Lifetime Achievement award. It will be presented in January.

John Mahoney (aka Frasier's dad) will guest star on Burn Notice in February, and rumors are already flying over who he might be playing (one of these choices was confirmed: old boss, "dead" father, one of the powerful people behind the burn notice, or Carla's handler).

Here is the corrected link for the website posting Neil Gaiman readings from the Graveyard Book tour.

Fox has given Fringe a full season order. I guess that means it is safe for me to start watching the episodes piling up on my DVR.

Space.com has a great Hubble image to celebrate the 10th anniversary.

Super Punch has some great retro posters for planetary travel (and links to some for time travel).

We will get to see Amanda Tapping back in Stargate, not just in Sanctuary. She confirmed this week that she is in the Atlantis finale as well as a 3rd SG-1 movie and the Atlantis movie.

Toshiba has a new battery that charges to 90% in 10 minutes and can be recharged 5,000-6,000 times (not just 500).

DVRs for tonight:
8pm My Name is Earl (NBC - 1 hour)
9pm Supernatural (CW)

Gateworld has the character descriptions for the new Stargate: Universe series as they were given to casting agents. Currently, this is at the level of rumor, and may change as they actually pick people, but it gives us a point of reference for where they are planning to go.

Pushing Daisies won the only Emmy by a sci-fi show not in the Creative Arts category (Best Director for the pilot). Creative Arts Emmys went to Pushing Daisies, Battlestar Galactica, Tin Man, Chuck, Lost, and Smallville.

Scientists now understand why the southern polar ice cap on Mars is off center.

CNet Crave has an image and article on a very strange new clock. The Corpus Clock (tribute to The Grasshopper Escapement) was designed by John Taylor and introduced by Stephen Hawking.

Outside.in has a new cool looking map tool for blogs. If I ever have a reason to include location information in my blog, I might try it.

DVRs for tonight:

8pm Sarah Connor Chronicles (FOX)
8pm Heroes: Countdown to the premiere (NBC - catch up special)
8:30 How I Met Your Mother (CBS - season premiere)

One day after announcing the ending of Stargate Atlantis (which producer Joseph Mallozzi comments on in his blog), SciFi is announcing the launching of a 3rd Stargate show. Stargate Universe will premier next summer, beginning with a 2-hour movie. SciFi Wire announcement.

The earlier discussion of the Top 20 SF Novels of the Past 20 Years, has led to an attempt to make a similar list for Fantasy. I'm sure I'll disagree with any list they come up with, but I find the discussion interesting. (Tastes really vary, but there are some great books and authors listed.)

There is a great interview with Michael Chabon (Yiddish Policemen's Union) at the LA Times.

DVRs for tonight:
Monk
Psych
Stargate Atlantis
Olympics

Stargate Atlantis will end with this season (5th) and continue as movies.

Hayao Miyazaki (Howl's Moving Castle, Princesss Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.) has a new movie, "Ponyo on the Cliff," which is getting raves in Japan. It sounds like a variation on The Little Mermaid. I wonder when we'll get a chance to see it here.

The Australian Museum Eureka Prize for scientific research has been awarded to a PhD student who found a way to make solar cells cheaply in a pizza oven.

Dave Langford has published his Top 20 SF books (although he cheated and also included other "Top" lists in boxes).

F&SF has a discussion about online short fiction.

InfoWorld has an article claiming that the standardization of JavaScript was a mistake. I'm not sure if I agree, but it was interesting.

DVRs for tonight:

RIP Don S. Davis. General Hammond of Stargate will make his final appearance in the dvd movie Stargate Continuum since the actor died Sunday of a heart attack at age 65. I'll miss spotting "oh him" in all the bit parts he had in other shows and movies.

Solar Flare has an article on the History of Science Fiction.

There is nothing scheduled for the DVR tonight.

Solar cells covered in microscopic nanowire hairs could greatly improve the efficiency of photovoltaic panels.

Neil Gaiman mentioned today that he wrote a short story on a postcard as part of an auction for charity. He and 12 other authors (including JK Rowling) will have their cards auctioned on June 10th, and the next day the stories will be available for everyone to read at Waterstones. The stories will also eventually be published along with 3 contest winners from the general public (2 adults and 1 child).

Researchers have discovered that some plants can change the weather.

A new vaccine is now available for people over 60 who have had chicken pox. It should prevent them from developing shingles.

SciFi Wire has an article about cast changes in the upcoming season of Stargate Atlantis. Robert Picardo (Woolsey) and Jewel Staite (Dr. Keller) move from recurring to regular cast. Paul McGillion (Dr. Beckett) will be back for 5 episodes. Contrary to some earlier reports, Dr. Weir won't make an appearance, and this may be the final season for Ronon.

There's a rumor that the CW is considering picking up Moonlight. This is just a chance, but I'll watch for details and let you know what happens.

SF Signal has reviewed all the Hugo short fiction nominees. Have you read them yet? Do you agree with them? Just a reminder that we have until July 7th to read all these and vote.

SF Universe has longer descriptions of Fringe and Dollhouse (the new genre shows coming from Fox) if you are curious. io9 also has a trailer for Dollhouse.

Do you want to see a preview for the new US version of Life on Mars? From this it looks like a pretty straight translation. Hard to tell if it will be good or bad, but I'll give it a shot.

I mentioned the new Google Earth the other day, and today it featured on MyStanford's home page. Stanford was 1 of 7 winners (out of 300 schools competing) of a Google prize for 3D mapping of the campus.

Subterranian Press has started putting their latest magazine online for free. I've never checked these out before, but they include stories by Charles deLint, John Scalzi, etc. and most issues have an audiobook.

Fairly interesting article about all the fighting going on about setting up high speed rail from LA to SF (the argument being the route and the funding).

Great article on cord blood. If you've been paying attention, you know I think this is a medical marvel being thrown away far too often. This covers pretty much all the issues.

According to SFTV.org:
SciFi looks to be planning to repurpose NBC's Journeyman, Bionic Woman
and Chuck, but do not appear to have Heroes on their schedule. The last
week of September shows Journeyman airing at 7 pm on Thursday with
The Bionic Woman at 7 pm on Friday. On Sunday night, they have Chuck
scheduled at 11 pm with Journeyman at 12 midnight. Once Doctor Who
ends its run in the 8 pm Friday time slot, it may be that one of the
NBC shows will take over that time slot on Oct 11th.

They have cast James McAvoy as Scotty in the new Star Trek movie. (I've seen him in 4 roles, but strangely remember him best as the faun in Chronicles of Narnia).

Dresden Files has been canceled. Not an official announcement, just a by-the-way comment in casting for another show: the lead actor has been cast in Big Shots for ABC (great cast, bad premise, I doubt I'll watch). I'm sad, I actually liked the show.
http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=1&id=43015

Good news and bad news from Fox: They changed their schedule and have moved Bones to Tuesday. I like this timeslot much better - there isn't any competition. They are also holding New Amsterdam for midseason. It actually looked good, and now I'm afraid they'll bury it (and Tim Minnear isn't even in the crew).

Here's a list of the extras for the box set of Stargate. (I hate extras only available for a set when I already have the individual seasons.)

Interview with Joss Whedon.

We're used to lists of best shows and prematurely canceled shows, but someone has now made a list of 5 SF shows that were completely trashed and destroyed before finally going off the air. Since 3 of the 5 are shows I was recording in first season and not even watching when they went off the air, I pretty much agree and would have a hard time finding better examples. What do you think?
