SF Signal reports that the old Atari 2600 games (like Space Invaders and Adventure) have gone online. Oh, the memories.

SF Signal also has the updated Nebula Awards nominations with links to the online versions so you can read them. See also: Locus analysis, note on why there was a correction

The Nebula Awards website has an interview with Jack McDevitt (about Cauldron, Cryptic, etc.).

Apparently some of the lost original Doctor Who episodes are believed to be in Zimbabwe, but they won't let anyone from the BBC in to look.

The Saturn Award nominations have been announced.

The Suvudu free e-library for Random House books (announced recently) has added more formats: Kindle, Sony, Scribd, and Stanza (in addition to the pdf they already include).

The Fox chairman has stepped down. I wonder if this will increase the chances for SF surviving on the network.

Renewal chances for Reaper aren't looking very good this week: one of the main characters has signed on to a pilot for another network.

CG Society shows the Steampunk award winners for video and art. Some great stuff there.

Auxillary Memory has a great article about the value of rereading classic SF books by listening to the audiobook versions. I really like audio books, but I hadn't thought of it from this direction.

3 recent items for Jericho fans: Skeet Ulrich has a new pilot for CBS, Jericho will be continuing as a comic (via i09 and Tor), and there is a possibility of a film version.

As if the original miniseries with Tim Curry wasn't scary enough to make everyone afraid of clowns, Warner Brothers is planning a movie version of Stephen King's It.

Oh, on the DVR front. I didn't mention that this Sunday at 8pm on NBC is the premiere of Kings. I've liked Ian McShane since Lovejoy, but I haven't decided if I'm going to watch this or not. See these reviews and decide for yourself: SF Gate, Zap2It, and What's Alan Watching

Some early pics from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland have leaked out.

New casting for the V remake is making it tempting: Morena Baccarin (Firefly) and Joel Gretsch (4400). The 2nd link also has news of the new pilot for Donald Faison of Scrubs.

Warner Brothers is planning a movie for Marvin the Martian.

If you missed Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog when it was free a couple weeks ago, you now have a 2nd chance at Hulu.com.

Quark is coming to dvd! The sci-fi parody from the 70s about an interstellar garbage collector which ran 8 episodes on NBC (of which I think I've seen 4) will be released on dvd October 14th.

Mike Brotherton and The Book Bark are having a discussion of good worldbuilding books. Help me remember which great examples they've left off.

Solar Flare lists 15 classic Doctor Who stories to show to fans of the new series.

100 Science Fiction novels recommended by a high school teacher. Some are the usual suspects, some are fairly odd selections. I think I've only read 5, but many have been on my TBR list for years.

NASA has confirmed water ice has been found on Mars.

EW is giving constant updates (sometimes with video included) from the San Diego Comic-Con.

The US version of Life on Mars has re-cast the role of Det. Hunt as Harvey Keitel instead of Colm Meaney.

SciFi Wire has an interview with Steven Moffat about how he'll approach Doctor Who as the new showrunner.

MTV is planning to remake Rocky Horror Picture Show. I really can't imagine who thought that would be a good idea.

Joss Whedon is planning to have as many webisodes as episodes for Dollhouse (13 each).

Solar Flare says Why British SciFi TV is better than American.

10pm Journeyman (NBC - still haven't watched the pilot for this)

Today is the 49th anniversary of NASA, and October 4th is the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, so there are a lot of articles this week covering mankind's 50 years in space. Yahoo has a fascinating article that interviews one of the people who worked on Sputnik. CNet also has a picture gallery, a timeline, and an article. Computerworld has an article that links computer developments back to Sputnik.
"Beep beep
boop boop
hello there.
Sputnik sails giggling through the skies.
Red flags, red faces,
jump in the race as
the space age begins with a surprise."
-- Leslie Fish, "Surprise"

Dogs (and one cat) in Star Wars costumes. Funny but wrong.

Patrick Stewart is disappointed that he has never been asked to guest star on Doctor Who (he's a fan). If just saying he's interested isn't enough to get him an invite, I'm sure he can put in a good word with David Tennant while they're acting together in Hamlet next year. I hope they give him a big part (recurring?).

The writers strike could come as early as November 1st. This could make for a really short season of TV and a strange mix of movies.

Roundup for 9-4-07

Not a surprise after the Royal Shakespeare announcement last week: Doctor Who season 5 will be delayed with the Christmas special in 2008 and 3 specials only for 2009. It still hasn't been decided if David Tennant will return for the delayed season or if they will recast.

Hugo awards were announced: Vernor Vinge won best novel, Naomi Novik won best new writer, Patrick Nielsen Hayden won best long form editor (new category), Pan's Labyrinth won best long from dramatic presentation, Steven Moffat won short form again for Doctor Who: The Girl in the Fireplace, David Langford won best fan writer for the 20th time (beating John Scalzi by 1 vote), etc.... I really like the look of the award - very appropriate for the first Japanese Worldcon.

Nasty rumor for BSG fans. SciFi may split the final season over 2 years: 10 eps in 2008, the rest in 2009. As if the wait until 2008 isn't bad enough.

It sounds a bit like friends having a joke together, but Kristen Bell and Clark Duke from Greek say they are forming a band. Well, we know they both can sing, let's just hope they choose better lyrics than that "Darwin Lied" song from Greek (and not quite as absurd as Reefer Madness).

According to SFTV.org:
SciFi looks to be planning to repurpose NBC's Journeyman, Bionic Woman
and Chuck, but do not appear to have Heroes on their schedule. The last
week of September shows Journeyman airing at 7 pm on Thursday with
The Bionic Woman at 7 pm on Friday. On Sunday night, they have Chuck
scheduled at 11 pm with Journeyman at 12 midnight. Once Doctor Who
ends its run in the 8 pm Friday time slot, it may be that one of the
NBC shows will take over that time slot on Oct 11th.

One promising note about the ABC remake of Life on Mars: Colm Meaney is going to play the old-school DIC. Good casting. I can totally picture him in the role. (Unlike their Sam Tyler, who will be played by Jason O'Mara, who played Stuart the publisher on Men in Trees.)

As if American education wasn't bad enough, some high schools are requiring kids to declare a major and career path in 9th grade! One, there is no way they can realistically know what they want to do at that age when getting there is at least 8 years away. Two, they are going to completely ignore the rest of the curriculum. So much for getting a broad base of knowledge before specializing.

Greg Grunberg is going to host NBC's special about their fall shows airing just about everywhere (every channel affiliated with them and online) over the next month. It might be worth checking out.
