Google is resurrecting January 2001 in an archive site as part of their 10th birthday celebration.

Space.com has an article on predictions and plans for NASA's next 50 years.

The Mercury News has reviewed and ranked a few of the multitude of taco shops in my neighborhood. I'm a bit amazed that someone was up to the challenge. Of course, they left off one of my favorites.

As a side effect of HBO's True Blood series, all 7 of the Sookie Stackhouse books are now in the New York Time's Bestseller list (ranging from #3 to #19).

Warner Brothers has announced they are developing an ElfQuest movie!!!!! Rawson Thurber will write, direct & produce. They haven't announced a format (live action or animation) yet. I have loved this story since I first read it about 27 years ago, so I'm thrilled the movie they've been talking about for years looks like it may finally happen. I just hope it ends up being a good adaptation. Links for coverage: Letter from Wendy Pini, Hollywood Reporter, Reuters, Empire, CanMag, CinemaBlend, IGN, Cinematical, and ElfQuest.com forum announcement.

MGM has given a greenlight to "A Cabin in the Woods", a movie co-written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.

NBC has revealed their coverage plan for the Olympics. 75% of events will be televised live for the east coast.

NASA plans to retire the shuttles in 2010, even though the replacement spacecrafts won't be ready for 4 more years.

City of Pearl by Karen Traviss is available from Eos as a free ebook until the end of August. This is the start of a good series, so check it out if you haven't already. (Thanks to SF Signal for the info.)

The Campbell Memorial Award (In War Times by Kathleen Goonan) and Sturgeon Award winners (Finistera by David R. Moles and Tideline by Elizabeth Bear) have been announced. I think Finistera is overrated, but Tideline was excellent.

Apparently, Locus changed the way votes are counted for the Locus Awards after the ballots were cast. (They counted subscriber votes twice.) A lot of people are upset by this since it changed some of the winners.

Andre Norton's will has been challenged, leaving unpublished works on hold pending a resolution.

Popsci.com has a nice slideshow of Mars landscapes.

RIP Stan Winston. The visual effects and makeup genius died of cancer yesterday at the age of 62. From Aliens to Jurassic Park to Galaxy Quest (along with dozens of other films), he was responsible for how SF looked on film for much of the last 30 years. See SF Signal article or IMDB for more links.

New Hubble quasar images have been released.

Auto makers are working hard to find alternatives to expensive gas: Honda has begun commercial production on hydrogen fuel cell cars, and Japanese company Genepax has developed a car that will run on water only.

The mummified remains of a duckbilled dinosaur have been found in South Dakota. It is among the best ever found in terms of preserved quality and quantity. We may soon have more than an educated guess as to what they looked like.

This couple makes me smile: After 55 years together, they will finally be able to legally get married tonight.

It sounds like the 2nd half of Battlestar Galactica's final season (which will air next year) may be longer than previously announced. It will have an extra 2 episodes and another TV movie added.

Reminder: Firefox 3 is being released tomorrow. They are aiming for record downloads for day 1, so get it tomorrow if you plan to get it.

Borderlands Books in SF (a great specialty book store that frequently hosts crowded events with good authors) wants to put in a cafe. They have a petition to put before the planning committee to support their idea. If you want to sign the petition, go to Cheryl Morgan's blog. If you want to see more ways to help, go to John Scalzi's blog.

Adult Swim has a listing of the 10 Best Star Wars Moments from Family Guy and Robot Chicken (with videos included). I'd seen the Robot Chicken ones, but not the Family Guy ones.

DVR for tonight:
5pm The Middleman (ABC Family - premiere)
10:30pm Dana Carvey special (HBO)

It's official: Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Blade 2) will be directing The Hobbit.

Features on Mars have been named after the late science fiction authors Jack Williamson, Roger Zelazny, C.S. Lewis, and Fredric Brown by NASA's JPL Mars Rover Project.

NASA is going to be developing tiny satellites (nanosats) that will be arranged in a constellation for communication in space.

Sky One is reviving Blake's 7. They have ordered two 60 minute episodes in an attempt to reboot the classic SF show like Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. I hope they do it well; I loved that show.

DVRs for tonight:
5pm Sarah Jane Adventures (repeats at 8pm)
6pm Doctor Who (repeats at 9pm)
7pm Battlestar Galactica
8pm Ghost Whisperer
9pm Moonlight

Due to some reminiscing at the Great Moonbuggy Race this year, NASA has revealed how duct tape saved the day in the Apollo 17 moon landing.

CNet has a couple slideshows for Earth Day: a photo guide to plastic recycling and NASA's Top 10 views of Earth. Another was added for Earth images from space.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been renewed, and Brian Austin Green will be a series regular for season 2.

Marvel has announced they are adapting Ender's Game into a comic later this year. Orson Scott Card will oversee the project. He is excited to get the story into a visual medium, one step closer to a movie.

New Scientist has 17 scientists telling the books that influenced them or changed their lives. Some are SF and some aren't, and if you click on the selection you can read what they have to say about the book and if there are other books they rank nearly as high.

Today is the 49th anniversary of NASA, and October 4th is the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, so there are a lot of articles this week covering mankind's 50 years in space. Yahoo has a fascinating article that interviews one of the people who worked on Sputnik. CNet also has a picture gallery, a timeline, and an article. Computerworld has an article that links computer developments back to Sputnik.
"Beep beep
boop boop
hello there.
Sputnik sails giggling through the skies.
Red flags, red faces,
jump in the race as
the space age begins with a surprise."
-- Leslie Fish, "Surprise"

Dogs (and one cat) in Star Wars costumes. Funny but wrong.

Patrick Stewart is disappointed that he has never been asked to guest star on Doctor Who (he's a fan). If just saying he's interested isn't enough to get him an invite, I'm sure he can put in a good word with David Tennant while they're acting together in Hamlet next year. I hope they give him a big part (recurring?).

The writers strike could come as early as November 1st. This could make for a really short season of TV and a strange mix of movies.

Reports are that Lucasfilm has filed for approval for 6 different titles for Indy 4. Which do you think they'll use (assuming they all pass)?
"Indiana Jones and the City of Gods"
"Indiana Jones and the Destroyer of Worlds"
"Indiana Jones and the Fourth Corner of the Earth"
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"
"Indiana Jones and the Lost City of Gold"
"Indiana Jones and the Quest for the Covenant"

Good music news:
- John Lennon's solo work is now available to download (legally) making George Harrison the only iTunes holdout of the Beatles (although his Traveling Wilbury's songs are available).
- Paul McCartney reports that the Beatles library is being remastered for download now and should be available by the end of the year.
- James Taylor is putting together a retrospective of 40 years of songs, to be sold in Starbucks by the holidays.

There's a competition to make the Jetsons a reality: build a personal plane that can be used like a flying car. It clearly has a long way to go, but the concept and pics are fun.

Someone has developed a tool to uncover self-interest edits of Wikipedia (like Diebold removing criticism of voting machines). I'm glad someone is defending the accuracy.

Now if they could only find a version of Welltris that plays like the original (sigh). Mom, while thinking of this, did I mention that the creators of Heaven & Earth have provided the game as a free download and it works on XP? I found it a week or 2 ago.
