One of the first 2 stories at Tor.com is a John Scalzi short story set in his Old Man's War universe. It is available online as text or audio.
It sounds like the replacement for William Peterson on CSI may be a serial killer (or just afraid of becoming one).
NBC has announced a schedule change for their fall lineup. "Life" will have double airings for the first 2 weeks (Mondays and Fridays at 10pm). Christian Slater's new show "My Own Worst Enemy" which was to have the Monday 10pm slot will now be delayed until October 13th.

JMS has said that he has no interest in continuing B5: The Lost Tales. He doesn't want to revisit B5 in a low-budget version again. A full-budget feature film would be the only way we'd see more B5.
William Peterson will be leaving CSI after the 10th episode this season (and not just temporarily).
Sue Stewart has responded to the AP article about the lawsuit over Andre Norton's estate.
Last week, Buzz Aldrin blamed scifi for the lack of interest young people have in real-life space exploration. This week, io9 lists stories it thinks hinder and inspire real science. I think both theories are seriously flawed though, because I think science is just as interesting without the special effects, and cautionary tales aren't intended to make you ignore scientific discovery, just consider possible ramifications of discoveries.
Scifi wire has an article with JJ Abrams talking about how they came up with the idea for Fringe, and how it is not an X-Files clone.
Remember, if you can get through the traffic to the jammed server, Dr. Horrible part 1 was released online today.
There is nothing scheduled for the DVR tonight.

The main writer/producer promises that Sara (Jorja Fox) will be coming back to CSI.
RIP Deborah Kerr. The actress from The King & I, The Prizoner of Zenda, Affair to Remember, etc.... has died at 86. TCM has changed their schedule to play 2 of her movies this Sunday.
The new Star Trek cast is now complete. Rumored casting of Chris Pine for Kirk and Karl Urban for Bones have been confirmed.
The 2-hour "Christmas" episode of The Closer will air on Monday, December 3rd at 8pm.
The results are in from the high tech scan of the Mona Lisa. It appears she did have eyelashes & brows at some point, but they faded or were "cleaned" off.
Comedy Central is launching thedailyshow.com with 13,000 videos covering the entire run of Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. This is their challenge to YouTube.
A team from Arizona State University has found evidence of early humans along the coast of South Africa dating back 164,000 years (about 40,000 years earlier than any evidence had shown before). They've made some interesting discoveries about the development of mankind. Another article can be found here.
UK researchers have turned stem cells from fat into nerve cells and plan to use a biodegradable polymer to place these cells where they can act as an artificial nerve and bridge the gap in damaged nerves for limbs and organs. Treatment could be ready in 4-5 years.
SciFi has greenlit a movie/pilot called Revolution which is about a colony world struggling for independence. It could be good, but will probably end up being lame.
60 percent of auto combustion energy is lost as heat. There are now people looking into adding thermoelectric generators to capture that energy and make cars more efficient. More ideas along this line can be found in the Popular Mechanics article.

9pm Moonlight (CBS) - New show about a vampire detective. Probably worth a pilot even if the reviews are dreadful.

Someone has summarized all the Heroes online comics in case, like me, you looked at one or two with bandwidth problems, never went back, and are missing some of the character details they reveal there.
Bionic Woman and Journeyman have added cast members.
A preliminary poster has been prepared for the next Pixar movie, Wall-E. I think it looks good.
Next year there will be 2 2nd-generation astronauts in space at the same time. Richard Garriott, creator of the Ultima computer games and son of Skylab astronaut Owen Garriott, will be traveling to the ISS as part of the Russian space tourist program and be met by 2nd generation cosmonaut Sergei Volkov. Cool.

The College of San Mateo is hosting a free, all day event this Saturday (tomorrow) at their new planetarium. There will be free planetarium shows, views from the solar telescope and other telescopes, demos, jazz and food. Sounds like it could be fun. Event flyer. Website with maps, schedule & raffle prizes.
Two different stories today about DNA sequencing: Scientists are using hair samples to sequence the DNA of mammoths, and researchers have mapped the genome of the pinot noir grape. It has more genes than humans, and more than 100 of them control flavor (double other plants).

An act signed in 2005 going into effect May 2008 will require us all to have Big Brother style "Real ID" Drivers Licenses that link to birth certificate, SSN, photo, and address (requiring a trip to DMV with all the paperwork to prove this for EVERYONE) or - for states that don't go along with this program - we will have to carry passports to fly a domestic plane or enter a federal building or national park.

Funny gimmick: It looks like Two and a Half Men and CSI are going to swap writers for one episode this season. The CSI is going to have Christine Baranski as the co-star of a murdered TV diva. (Probably a dream fulfillment since the writer is known to have feuded with both Rosanne Barr and Cybil Sheppard on their shows. Sounds like he learned Joss Whedon's lesson since 2.5 Men doesn't have a name in the title. ;)

World Fantasy Award nominees announced. 2 of the novels I already wanted to read. I never heard of a 3rd but have added it to my wish list because it sounds great. The other 2 don't interest me and I tend to think they made the list by author name without anyone bothering to read them first. The sad thing is you have to get down to Best Anthology before you find something I've already read. You can guess which books fit in which categories if you check out the list.

In trying to find out if Jeckyll was hacked for US television (I can't find runtimes, but it sounds like it was), I found that Steven Moffat wrote 42 episodes of a show called "Press Gang" back in the early 90s. I'm curious about this, even if it is aimed a bit younger. (Oh, and rumors persist that Steven Moffat will take over Doctor Who if Russell Davies leaves.)
